In Martin County, we have developed an atmosphere of communication and collaboration that has been astonishing. Law Enforcement started talking with Public Health Services and before we knew it the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the Drug Enforcement Administration, Drug Task Forces, the local Fire Department and the County Board were working together. We've created protocols and standards of operation that didn't exist before. An ordinance in Martin County was created as part of this collaboration. The scary part is, we are just beginning. In the Martin County area, we've moved forward with awareness. The media has become involved and have conducted phone in radio shows. We have had several articles printed in the local paper and even had a community wide public awareness seminar where over 350 people were in attendance. The Sheriff's Office started a voluntary chaplaincy program in the jail to help all the inmates specifically driven by meth inmates ; , targeted at changing the heart which is the core element needed for successful treatment. In an effort to be proactive, we now have a weekend "Consequential Camp", funded by donated dollars targeted towards at risk youth to help them change early behaviors before they travel down the chemical dependency highway. We're educating the 4-H Ambassadors in what to look for when they walk the road ditches. The Ambassador's take the information back to their respective clubs and pass on their knowledge to their groups. You can see how awareness is essential and can become infectious. We need to grow out of the mindset that this is someone else's issue and take action. Having the support of all local law enforcement, emergency services, effected agencies and the county board is critical. In summation, take the time.
